Practical matters

We’ve tried to think of everything you might want to know, but if you have a question you can’t find the answer to below, please get in touch on the contact page.

You will stay at the lovely Chalet Bonnavaz – a simple but comfortable chalet d’alpage, the traditional building of the Haute Savoie, which has been recently renovated by Étienne. The house has a large garden and is in the centre of nature – a river with waterfall and bathing pool (for the hardy!) are to be found on the property below the house. In addition, the chalet has a large Swedish hot tub – heated by a wood-fired stove immersed in the water – and this will be at your disposal throughout your stay, summer or winter. It’s the perfect way to unwind and slow down.

The chalet is situated in the small hamlet of Bonnavaz, comprising just two other main houses, and a few weekend cabins dotted around in the woods. There is a ‘buvette’ (simple restaurant) in the hamlet, otherwise the nearest village is Le Praz de Lys, which, being a ski resort, is subject to very seasonal opening times. Ten minutes away are the towns of Les Gets, Morzine and Taninges.

Rooms for the retreat are allocated on a first come-first served basis, and there’s more detail about them here. We’ll do our best to allocate you the exact room you request, but we ask for two choices in order of preference.

Bedroom 1 has its own shower; otherwise all bedrooms share one spacious bathroom which has both a shower and separate bathtub. This bathroom is on the same floor as bedrooms 1 and 2, and there is a separate WC on this floor in addition.

All food and drink is included in the listed prices. Breakfasts and lunch are buffets; the evening meal will be cooked and served to you. There’s no cleaning or tidying, leaving you free to work on your writing, or your yoga practice. Meals will be wholesome and home-cooked with fresh ingredients. This is not a reduced calorie, vegetarian or vegan retreat, but we source as much local and organic food as we can, and will try to accommodate any dietary requirements, including food allergies and intolerances. Please let us know in advance if you have any special requests.

Your retreat is situated in the hamlet of Bonnavaz, one hour from Geneva, the closest airport. You are free to make your own way to and from the retreat, but we can arrange private or shared transfers from the airport if you prefer. The costs varies a lot depending on the season but we will discuss this with you. There is also a bus that leaves from directly outside Arrivals at Geneva Airport and which comes to Taninges or Cluses – we can collect you from there, by prior arrangement. The bus is a cheaper option than private transfers. However you arrive, we ask you to get to Bonnavaz between 12 and 4pm on the first day of the retreat, but don’t worry, we can advise on all matters concerning timings and transfers once you’ve expressed your interest.

The chalet is provided with wifi so you can keep in touch with home, or do any research that just can’t wait. We do encourage you to stay off devices as much as possible though – it’s a chance to break that twitter or instagram habit, and let ideas, creativity, nature and people be your inspiration for the week.

We will email you to confirm your request and to send an invoice for a first payment to hold your room. We will advise how much this will be upon enquiry (it varies between rooms but is around 12-18% of the total). You will then have a week to transfer the money in order to secure your room – we cannot hold rooms without payment. The balance of the payment is to be made 4 weeks before the start of the retreat.

Cancellations must be made four weeks ahead of your retreat start date. Cancellations made after the four week point prior to your retreat start date are entitled to a 50% refund. All refunds are subject to a €25 admin fee. In the final week before the start of your retreat, no refunds are made.
